No matter how diligent we are with applying SPF and staying true to our skin-care routines, the reality of living in the modern world is that any trip outside can yield negative impacts on the health of our skin. From UV rays to free radicals and other environmental stressors, going about our day to day can expose us to tons of factors that lead to hyperpigmentation, unwanted texture, premature signs of aging and more.

For years, ingredients like vitamin C and E have been praised for their damage-repairing benefits on the skin, but as we learn more about the science of our skin, newer and more advanced technologies for battling damage arise, and at the forefront of that exploration is science-backed skin-care brand SkinCeuticals. One of the brand’s newest launches features an ingredient you may not have heard of—phloretin—but it is bound to be your ultimate discoloration savior. Ahead, New York dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD walks us through all things phloretin.

SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF: The Next Generation of Discoloration-Fighting Products

Before we get into what makes SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF so unique, we have to address what exactly phloretin is. “Phloretin works as an antioxidant that also helps to improve the look of dullness and discoloration,” says Dr. Garshick. While we typically associate vitamin C and other antioxidants with fighting discoloration, SkinCeuticals’ use of phloretin in addition to other powerhouse pigmentation faders makes it a first-of-its-kind product.

“SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF contains a combination of 2 percent phloretin, 10 percent vitamin C and 0.5 percent ferulic acid to protect the skin against free radical damage and improve skin tone and texture, especially helping to even skin tone and reduce discoloration and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” Dr. Garshick explains. “The product contains 10% L-ascorbic acid which makes it a good option even for those with sensitive skin. Ferulic acid is a great addition as it helps to stabilize and boost the efficacy of other antioxidants.”
