Why Plastic Surgeons ‘Heart’ This Face Shape

More than just pulling and tightening existing features, today’s facial rejuvenation techniques are more comprehensive and take things such as sculpting and shaping the face into account. The question is: Which face shape should we be striving for?

“If you look throughout the ages from Nefertiti until today, the youthful, beautiful appearance has always been a heart-shaped face,” says Beverly Hills, CA, facial plastic surgeon, Babak Azizzadeh, MD. “The jawline, neck and chin areas create the bottom portion of the heart-shaped appearance and high-arched cheeks and a full mid face and temples are the top portion.”

Many women we identify with beauty today have this facial shape-from Michelle Pfeiffer to Naomi Campbell to Reese Witherspoon. The current trend in facial rejuvenation also pays attention to lateral facial volume, which assists in achieving the heart-shaped face.

“Now that we have so many tools for facial rejuvenation, we’re thinking about what more we can do with them. Regarding the heart-shaped face, the temples are a key component,” Dr. Azizzadeh says. “There is a fat pad there that atrophies as we age. It’s an area that no one really looks at, but it does give away your age. Doctors haven’t been looking at it, and patients don’t look at it, but it makes a tremendous difference in the overall aesthetic.”
