While TikTok and other social media platforms may have their downsides, we have to admit that they’re a goldmine for discovering clever life hacks and brilliant ideas we didn’t know we needed. In the beauty world, TikTok trends are constantly helping people learn how to make their self-care routines easier and more effective, of which “jacket hairstyles” are the latest.
“Jacket hairstyles are a great way to prevent your hair from getting matted or messy from jacket collars, scarfs and other aspects associated with fall and winter attire,” says celebrity hairstylist Johnny Lavoy, “So, when thinking jacket styles, think of styles that keep the hair off the neck or controlled under a collar.” In preparation for jacket season, here are some jacket hairstyle options to try this fall and winter.
Why Should You Try It?
Like with most trends, you might be wondering, “Why try a jacket hairstyle?” right about now. As Lavoy explains, jacket hairstyles are not only cute, they’re functional. “If you have a beautiful bouncy blowout that you want to rock, I suggest twisting your hair in a high, loose bun on top of your head, securing it with a couple of large hairpins. This will keep the body in your style, and once you arrive at your destination, simply take out the pins, and you will have that fresh blowout bounce.

High Ponies
“The high or snatched ponytail is a stylish way to avoid messing up your hair while wearing a jacket,” Lavoy says. “The beauty of the pony is that it could be worn with any texture you wish, from sleek and straight to wavy or curly.”

Chignon
Whether you’re a guest at a winter wedding or going for a night on the town, Lavoy says a chignon is another great jacket hairstyle for fall. “Like the pony, it can work with any hair texture,” he says.

Ballerina Buns
Like a chignon, a sleek ballerina bun keeps hair off the collar, making it a great accessory for a scarf-centered look. Lavoy also notes that ballerina buns are a good jacket hairstyle option for work. The style is also super on trend, as ballerina-inspired buns with oversized scrunchies were seen on the runway during the recently concluded FW24 NYFW.

Messy Buns
Just as functional as the sleek ballerina bun, Lavoy offers messy buns as a more playful alternative to the slicked-back bun if you want a more carefree jacket hairstyle.
