New data published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) finally lets us tap into information we’ve been dying to know: which areas of the world are the most plastic surgery heavy, and what the people there are requesting. The report reveals which countries rank where on the global plastic surgery leaderboard, and the results may not be what you originally thought.
According to the study, the top five countries responsible for almost half of all identified plastic surgery procedures in the world are the United States, Brazil, Japan, Italy and Mexico.

The United States comes in at number one for the number of procedures overall (4.2 million), but when calculated by per-capita figures, this equals 13 people per every thousand—significantly less than other spots around the globe, according to Business of Fashion.
Brazil accounts for more than 2.5 million of the world’s plastic surgery procedures last year alone, second only to the U.S. When calculated per-capita, however, both Brazil and Colombia (ranked at number 11) come in at 12 people per thousand, which is very high when the population of both countries are taken into account (many citizens are living below the poverty line). Brazil’s most popular requests are centered around body sculpting, including the improvement of the breast, abdomen and buttock areas (a predictable choice for the seaside country).
Japan is accountable for 1.1 million procedures (eyelid surgery, aka blepharoplasty, is the country’s most common surgical procedure); Italy for just over 955,000; and Mexico for 923,000 (both Italy and Mexico count liposuction as their top procedural choice).
