Concealer is a makeup staple many of us swear by. It covers, brightens, shapes, highlights and can instantly transform your face. Still, its most noteworthy job is concealing dark circles. Finding a good formula is crucial, but a smooth finish is just as essential when it comes to under-eye coverage. After all, the last thing anyone wants (or needs) is extra creases around the eye area. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably tried every trick in the book to eliminate concealer creasing. Recently, TikTok has served up a new application method for delivering flawless, smooth and crease-free finishes. Ahead, we look into whether or not it gets the job done with two makeup artists who put the hack to the test.

What is the viral creaseless concealer hack?

We’re all on a mission to get smoother under the eyes. “Given that the area does not produce oil it tends to be really dry,” says celebrity makeup artist Emily Gray. From eye creams to concealers, the under-eye enhancing journey is never-ending, which is why this video is so captivating. Instead of applying the concealer first and then topping it with setting powder, TikTok creator and makeup artist monika_mua_ mixes the two. The quick clip shows the artist dipping her concealer wand into the setting powder, applying the blend to her under-eyes, and then blending for a flawless finish.

Benefits of the viral creaseless concealer hack

Celebrity makeup artist and founder of Spatch, Quinn Murphy explains that the biggest benefit from the hack is speed. Cutting down the two-step method means you can skip straight to blending. Saving time is always a plus, especially when doing your glam. “If you’re a full-coverage makeup person and want a speedier way to achieve the benefits of setting your makeup, this hack is for you,” he says. Time aside, Gray adds that it also delivers an airbrushed finish.

Testing the viral creaseless concealer hack

As true artists, both experts decided to give this hack a try with each of their go-to concealers. “I used a fluffy concealer brush, first picking up some of Catrice’s True Skin concealer ($7) before dabbing it into banana powder, and then buffing the products in. I didn’t think it was going to blend at all, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it did,” says Gray. Murphy was also impressed by his real-time results, saying that when using it with the SPATCH Invisible Spot Fix ($29), it set the concealer but didn’t result in a cakey look.

Does the viral creaseless concealer hack work?

Anyone who’s used a loose setting powder before knows that things can get messy fast. “Loose powders tend to fly around, making it harder to control how much powder you pick up,” says Murphy. With this hack, you get to cut out the middleman and potentially avoid a mess. By dipping the wand directly into the powder you don’t have to worry about a messy powder puff or powder escaping the jar.

“Overall, this hack works, but those with dry skin may find it to be too drying long-term,” says Gray. To counteract this, she recommends using a bit of eye cream prior to the application. However, for those with oily skin, she notes that the method would be a great fit.

That said, it’s easy to see why this video has shot to the top of many FYPs. It’s simple and seemingly foolproof. Following the original video, several other creators have shared their thoughts and experiences with the hack, solidifying the trend.

The final takeaway

Setting powder alone doesn’t always get the job done. The application is just as important. ”All concealer needs to be set so as not to move around your face,” says Gray. However, the amount of coverage will depend on the type of products you use. A sheer concealer with setting powder will likely warrant lighter coverage, while a thicker product will give you more of an airbrushed look. “Overall, you’ll have a more consistent texture doing the concealer followed by a powder, as this way doesn’t always give a uniform texture,” says Murphy.

Bottom line: If you’re in a time crunch and need to quickly beat your face, it may be worth giving this viral method a try.
