The Three Phases Of Rosacea

The Three Phases Of Rosacea featured image

Rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition, appears in stages, each varying in severity. While some experience all three stages, others experience only pre-rosacea. However, if it is left untreated, it typically progresses and may be present at all times.

In the very first stages of rosacea, pre-rosacea, the skin may have a slight redness or flushed appearance that comes and goes. It’s especially noticeable in the center of the face and around the nose, cheeks and chin. It’s also accompanied by pimple-like bumps that make it look like acne. There may also be a few broken capillaries.

The most serious form of rosacea, inflammatory rosacea results in pustules, red bumps, and cysts in addition to constant redness. It starts in the center of the face and can spread to cover much of the face and even the chest.

Over time, rosacea can transition into vascular rosacea, which affects the blood vessels to a greater degree. The nose and cheeks may become swollen, and enlarged blood vessels become more visible. Your skin may be especially sensitive, and it’s not uncommon to experience oily skin and even dandruff. Unlike the earliest stage, removing the rosacea trigger doesn’t lead to the symptoms subsiding.

If you believe you may be suffering from rosacea, talk to your dermatologist about the growing number of treatment options.
