The Unbelievable Hack That Makes Mascara Last Longer

The Unbelievable Hack That Makes Mascara Last Longer featured image

As much as I love breaking open and trying a new beauty product, I have a hard time letting my old standbys go. I’ve been known to only apply the tiniest drop of my go-to body oil so it lasts a really long time, add water to my favorite cleanser or body wash to extend it a few more days, and one time I literally cut my hand attempting to break open a serum to get two more drops out.

Resourceful, maybe, but a habit that probably borders more on the ridiculous when it gets to these levels.

That’s why when I stumbled across a late-night Instagram #makeuphack trick that several people were sharing, I had to try it. The simple solution for a almost-dry tube of mascara: Add a few drops of contact lens solution to make it last a little longer (it also has the great side effect of sort of unclumping mascaras that tend to go clumpy on lashes and it gets every last bit of formula off the sides).

I wear contacts, so I am fully stocked up on contact solution and my must-have Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23) was almost gone, so I added five drops to it and shook it up. It totally worked; it wasn’t watery, didn’t dilute the mascara and the formula went on just as great—if not better—as it always does. Plus, because contact lens solution is sterile, there’s no need to worry that it will have a weird reaction with your eyes (I’m typically supersensitive and nothing bad happened).

Bottom line: It made my almost-empty tube last a solid five additional days—and someone even asked me if I had gotten lash extensions, so it was definitely doing its job.
