New Fragrances to Try This Month
Maison Francis Kurkdjian APOM Eau de Parfum ($245)
The brand’s biggest launch of the year, APOM stands for “A Part of Me” and offers a genderless, floral, aromatic amber scent. “There is nothing more beautiful than skin, where my perfume comes to life,” says perfumer and founder Francis Kurkdjian. “A fragrance is a memory in the making. Is this fragrance for men? No… For women? No… A genderless fragrance then? A fragrance for men or women… That is not the point. I am inspired by the story. First I think of a name, then I seek for the feeling that matches. I am driven by the story.”
KEY NOTES
Neroli, lavender, orange blossom, vanilla, ylang-ylang, white musk
Dolce&Gabbana Devotion Eau de Parfum Intense ($175)
The latest iteration of the brand’s Devotion fragrance story, this deliciously gourmand scent offers a bolder olfactive rendition of the original scent. According to the brand, the “tantalizing candied citrus notes of its predecessor” have been replaced with “distinctive and comforting top notes of hazelnut.” However, the orange blossom and Madagascar vanilla remain the same. The bottle is a showpiece that beautifully captures the essence of the juice and is adorned by the brand’s emblematic Sacred Heart.
KEY NOTES
Hazelnut, orange blossom, Madagascar vanilla
AESOP Virēre Eau de Parfum ($160)
The brand’s eleventh fragrance in the collection, Virēre “draws inspiration from Mediterranean holiday memories, capturing the essence of serene moments spent under a sun-dappled canopy or relaxing beneath a fig tree.” Derived from the Latin verb meaning ‘to be full of life,’ this fragrance makes you feel as such. It’s a perfect gift for the outdoorsy nature lover in your life, or maybe that’s you.
KEY NOTES
Bergamot, fig, green tea
Le Labo Fragrances Coriandre 39 ($375)
The newest addition to the brand’s City Exclusive collection, this surprising scent is an ode to Mexico City and celebrates cilantro in an exciting way. (Coriandre means cilantro in French.) Le Labo describes the fragrance as “a sensory experience that teeters between tranquil and vibrant. Think forest bathing in El Bosque de Chapultepec—a peace enriched by call-and-repeat birdsong—or sipping mezcal in the shade at a humming café in La Condesa.” It’s also refillable at any Le Labo store.
KEY NOTES
Lime, cilantro leaves, green florals, musk
Oscar de la Renta New York Eau de Parfum ($115)
An ode to the vibrant energy and sexy elegance of New York City, this floral-amber-rose fragrance is the perfect mix of sweet and vibrant. In the campaign, led by Oscar de la Renta muse Candice Swanepoel, the supermodel says, “New heights. New life. New dream. New you. New worlds. New York.” One spritz captures that spirit.
KEY NOTES
Strawberry, tangerine heart, pink peppercorn, gardenia flower, rose, jasmine flower, clary sage, orris concrete, sandalwood, sugared crystals, vanilla bean, musk
TOM FORD BEAUTY Black Lacquer Eau de Parfum ($405)
This rich, amber-woody fragrance oozes luxury, and features two groundbreaking accords in the world of perfumery, according to the brand. First, a Black Lacquer accord that gives the scent “a smoky, dimensional opulence.” Inspired by the ancient art of lacquering prized woods, it marries fir needles, styrax, black pepper and black rum. Second, a Makassar ebony wood note that “evokes aspects of leather and birch.” Exclusive to Tom Ford Beauty, the note is crafted using headspace technology so it doesn’t harm the tree.
KEY NOTES
Indian ink accord, Makassar ebony wood, olibanum
Chloe L’Eau de Parfum Intense Eau de Parfum ($176)
Exuding sophistication and femininity, this chic, floral perfume celebrates the joyful elements of the rose. The brand says it “captures the free femininity embodied by Gaby Aghion, the Chloé founder.” Its addictive, sensual qualities lend a modern interpretation of the classic rose for a new generation. Plus, we love the burgundy ribbon for fall, and the bottle is refillable.
KEY NOTES
Raspberry, rose, amber, cashmeran, cedar
Acqua di Parma Luce di Rosa Eau de Parfum ($350)
Bulgarian rose is the leading lady in this gender-neutral, floral-woody fragrance, which is the latest addition to the brand’s Signatures of the Sun collection. The rose is distilled from flowers harvested in the Kazanlak region of Bulgaria through a steam-water process that captures the essence of the rose at its most vibrant. The scent begins with a burst of citrus and ends with warm, woody notes, but the freshness of the rose remains throughout.
KEY NOTES
Bergamot, mandarin, black pepper, pink pepper CO2 extract, cardamom, Bulgarian rose, geranium, vetiver, guaiac wood, cedarwood, musk nuances
D.S. & DURGA Big Sur Eucalpytus Eau de Parfum ($210)
Last November, the brand dropped this eau de parfum—its first fine fragrance created based on a home fragrance—as a limited-edition Studio Juice and it sold out within 24 hours. Now, it’s back! “BSE captures the fresh airs of eucalyptus groves off of Highway 1,” says cofounder David Moltz. “It is chock-full of my proprietary eucalyptus accord that, unlike straight eucalyptus oil—which is medicinal— builds out the realistic aroma of wild eucalyptus: a green, pungent, fresh, earthly, floral and spicy fragrance that is one of my favorite notes on Earth.”
KEY NOTES
Wet wood, Pacific spray, eucalyptus globulous, cardamom, rosemary, magnolia, eucalyptus cone, cyprus, dry leaves
