Move over balayage, there’s a new hair-color trend in town. According to data from Pinterest, Jane Fonda’s new pixie hair made quite the impact, showing “short grey hair” as the top trending hair-related search term for women over 40.
The I-want-everything platform breaks down who exactly is after the silver ‘do by decade: Pinners in their 40s show a 514-percent search spike, those in their 50s saw a 571-percent increase and those in their 60s searched it 610-percent more than they did the year prior.

So how do you care for grey strands? Stephanie Brown, master colorist at IGK Salon SoHo says it’s all about the in-shower staples. “Get a good color-treated shampoo and conditioner like Redken Color Extended Shampoo ($20.50) or Davines Minu Shampoo and Conditioner ($29),” she says. “For dyed silver hair, I also like Overtone Pastel Silver Conditioner ($28) to keep silver hair looking fresh.”
Along with a shampoo designed for color-treated hair—this should be your go-to shampoo—Brown says to also invest in a purple shampoo (we recommend using this once a week to keep tones in check). “Grey or white strands tend to turn yellow sometimes, so using a purple shampoo and conditioner will help,” she says. Brown’s favorites: Muvo Purple Shampoo ($27) and Alias Blonde Ambition Shampoo. “IGK also makes purple drops called Mixed Feelings ($29) that you can add into your favorite shampoo or styling product.”
Last but not least, make masks your friend. “Grey hair tends to be a little drier, so masks will help smooth out the hair and moisturize it so you’ll have less frizz.” Ones to try, according to the expert: it’s a 10 Miracle Mask ($32), Living Proof Restore Mask ($43) and the brightening Davines Minu Mask ($36), which she counts as her all-time favorite.
