Celebrities live under a microscope, constantly scrutinized by the media and fans alike. However, just because Hollywood’s elite tend to live such public lives doesn’t mean the rest of us have the right to viciously judge them, especially when it comes to their choices in cosmetic procedures.

Unfortunately, Sandra Bullock is one of the most recent actresses to be harshly criticized for her looks after the 2018 Oscars when she showed up with her face looking a bit more plump than usual. Fans immediately took to Twitter to attack her new look, accusing her of getting too much cheek filler.

Three months later, Bullock is addressing the rumors in an interview with InStyle. “This past Oscars I was sick and had allergies, but I was like, “I’m just going to go. It’s part of my job, and I’m happy to be there,” Bullock explains. “Then the next day they were saying, “Oh, she has cheek fillers and implants.”

Unfortunately, this serious scrutiny disturbed Bullock: “I am affected by it because I don’t feel confident when I dress up and go on the red carpet. I’m not that person who knows how to work it. I try to channel Beyoncé. I do the same pose every time. I try not to dread that kind of stuff, but I do get incensed and think, ‘How can they write this?’”

Plastic surgery speculation is common for celebrities and people rarely think about the emotional effect it might have on the target. Needless to say, negatively commenting on other people’s looks can bring forth insecurities that weren’t there in the first place. To make it worse, criticism of celebrities who undergo cosmetic treatments (or who are just perceived as having gotten cosmetic treatments) can often be even harsher.

Ultimately, this circle of speculation and shame is detrimental to self-esteem, regardless of celebrity status. Whether you get cosmetic procedures or not, and whether or not you decide to disclose that information, is completely up to you, and no one should try to tell you otherwise.
