This year we’ve seen some trends come and go while others have shown some serious staying power (looking at you, bobs). Pinterest utilizes data from its over 518 million monthly active users to predict trends with exceptional accuracy. They shared the beauty trends they expect to be big this summer, and the list is interesting. While we’re already on board with some, we’re not sure you’ll ever convince us to take it back to chunky highlights. According to Pinterest, these are the summer 2024 trend—the good, the bad and the dated.
Retro revolution
Retro beauty trends have been on the rise, and according to Pinterest, they’ll continue heating up this summer. From head to toe, the 90s and early 2000s are back in a big way. Searches for 90s makeup look and 2000s makeup increased 270 and 580 percent, respectively. Some anticipated vintage makeup comebacks, based on search data, include 90s lip, 90s glam makeup and lash clusters.
To our surprise, searches for 2000s chunky highlights have surged over 5,400 percent, and that’s not the only retro highlight you can expect to see this summer. Calico hair searches jumped more than 6,500 percent, and interest in heavy highlights on dark hair and 90s blonde have also expanded.
No body part is safe from these throwbacks, it seems, as searches for 90s nail art, Y2K duck nails and 90s French tip nails have all seen a surge.
Bob squad
We’ve seen dozens of celebrities do the chop this year. The bob has quickly become one of the most commonly seen styles on red carpets this season, and the trend is taking off at home too. The Italian bob and 90s layered bob are garnering a lot of interest on Pinterest, but searches for razor cut bob jumped 8,200 percent, making it the biggest leap on the list.
Braid brigade
Summer is always a good time to lean into braids, and Pinterest says there are a few styles in particular that will be trending this season. Look out for an influx of baby braid styles, mermaid braids and angel braids.
Angelic makeup
Speaking of angel braids, angel beauty is also piquing Pinterest users’ interest right now. We see searches for glowy, dewy makeup continue to rise. Alongside it, smokey silver eye makeup and doll eye makeup are also taking off. We’re just speculating here, but this could have something to do with Sabrina Carpenter’s signature look right now.
Italian makeup
Live la dolce vita this summer with Italian-inspired makeup looks. Pinterest reports searches for soft nude makeup and cherry red lipstick have shot up. Plus, sultry makeup looks searches have surged over 920 percent.
Fruity nails
It seems wanting our skin to look like food (glazed doughnut, strawberry girl, etc.) has shifted to nail trends. Searches for a variety of fruit-inspired manicures have surged, including grapefruit nails, blueberry nail art, cute strawberry nails and berry nails.
