Margot Robbie brought the glam to the Barbie world premiere by embracing a ’60s aesthetic with a Schiaparelli gown and a retro ponytail. The Australian actress paid homage to the iconic Barbie ‘Solo in the Spotlight’ doll from 1960 on the star-studded red carpet. To perfect this nostalgic look, celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett crafted a mesmerizing ponytail reminiscent of Barbie’s iconic hair. Here, we break down his tips on how to recreate this look at home.
According to Scarlett, the key to achieving this polished pony is the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate line. The aim was to capture the essence of Barbie for the red carpet. “I was inspired to create this doll-like ponytail from the 1960s to coordinate with her stunning ’60s-inspired custom Schiaparelli gown,” he explained.
Smooth + Shape
To begin, Scarlett gently detangled Robbie’s hair and then shampooed it with Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo ($32). He then applied a mist of Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Lightweight Liquid Conditioner ($32) and combed through with the help of Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Detangler ($16).
For a high-volume blowout, Scarlett applied Redken Quick Blowout ($26) followed by Redken Big Blowout ($26) gel. Once dry, he set the hair in Velcro rollers and allowed them to cool. He then left a two-inch section of the hairline out for a smooth finish, using Tangle Teezer’s The Ultimate Styler ($17).
Next, Scarlett secured the inner ponytail with hair ties and set the entire ponytail, along with the remaining hairline sections, in two-inch curls. Once the curls had cooled, he gently brushed them out, shaping both the bang area and the ponytail for a polished and voluminous look. Finally, he set the entire hairstyle with Redken Max Hold Hairspray ($26), providing flexible hold and a radiant shine.
With this step-by-step guide and the right products, we can’t wait to channel the glamour of the Barbie movie red carpet for our own viewing party for the world’s most anticipated summer movie of the year.
