In a recent survey of more than 1,700 NewBeauty readers, we uncovered some surprising trends in luxury skin-care shopping habits. While traditional beauty retailers still dominate, Amazon is quickly becoming a go-to destination for high-end skin care, with 51 percent of respondents reporting they’ve purchased beauty products on the platform.
But which luxury brands are our readers actually adding to their Amazon carts? Here’s the breakdown:
- Peter Thomas Roth (14 percent of Amazon beauty shoppers)
- Elemis (13.6 percent)
- Sunday Riley (13.5 percent)
- Lancôme (9.3 percent)
- Estée Lauder (7.6 percent)
Interestingly, while these percentages might seem low, they represent a significant shift in luxury beauty shopping habits. For context, 56.3 percent of all respondents have purchased Peter Thomas Roth products from any retailer, meaning that nearly a quarter of PTR buyers are now turning to Amazon for their purchases.
The trend is similar for other brands: 56.7 percent of respondents have purchased Elemis products overall, with Amazon accounting for about 24 percent of those purchases.
It’s worth noting that some ultra-luxury brands have a much smaller presence on Amazon. Less than one percent of respondents reported buying Augustinus Bader on Amazon, along with Dr. Barbara Sturm products.
This data suggests that while Amazon is making inroads in the luxury beauty market, there’s still a preference for traditional beauty retailers when it comes to the highest-end brands.
