“As we age, our hair naturally changes in texture, density and length retention, which is why many women over 50 look for styles and cuts that add volume, movement and a youthful touch,” says Lynch. Soft layered cut

“When mature clients begin to complain about the effects of aging they start to see on their faces (loss of volume in the cheeks, jowls beginning to form, etc.) they ask my recommendations for the best haircuts to counteract these effects, but they also don’t want to lose the length as it makes them feel youthful. My answer is always layers,” says professional hairstylist and extension artist Michelle Clevaland. “When the hair is all one length, it creates a vertical line from the top of the head to the ends, which can draw the eyes up and down. This will only enhance the ‘sagging face’ effect that mature women are trying to avoid.” Cutting layers into the hair provides movement and ‘lift’ to the face, creating a softer, more youthful look, she explains.

Professional hairstylist and owner of Roman K Salon Roman Kusayev says a soft layered cut is a great option for women over 50 as it “adds movement and volume without looking heavy.” Lynch adds that for those with thinner hair, adding soft layers can help add dimension and make the hair appear and feel fuller.

“My all time favorite haircut that will suit women over 50 is face-framing layers. This cut can help enhance features and create a lifting effect. It can help hide some of the face areas that may show signs of aging,” says professional hairstylist at IGK NYC Olya Iudina. “Another reason why this cut works well for women over 50 is that hair naturally becomes thinner with age, and long layers help create the illusion of fullness and bounce. It is also pretty low maintenance since it doesn’t require frequent trims, and the shape can last for about four months.”

Lynch agrees that face-framing layers are a flattering option that helps soften facial features while adding dimension.
