When it comes to women in sports, there are a few names that are synonymous with their field. For Lisa Leslie, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time WNBA MVP, this is undeniably true. She has been a defining figure in basketball for decades, breaking barriers and setting new standards for female athletes. Not only is she celebrated for her physical prowess—such as being the first woman to dunk in the WNBA—she has also paved the way in embracing and celebrating her glam side. Her book, Don’t Let the Lipstick Fool You, reflects her unique blend of athletic excellence and beauty. We caught up with Leslie as she delivered the Keynote address at Revision Skincare’s Elite Retreat in Dallas, an exclusive industry event for aesthetic experts. Here, she shares her beauty inspirations, skin-care secrets, and her thoughts on the evolution of glam in women in sports.

Who do you look to for beauty, makeup and skin-care inspiration?

“I would probably have to start with my mom and even my grandmother. Even though it’s so old school, I just remember my grandma with her Pond’s moisturizer. Watching my mom move through different brands and products really inspired me. I actually started in high school, where I began to pay attention to the importance of moisturizing. I still think about her now and how beautiful her skin was. She aged gracefully, and that has always inspired me to take care of my skin and the importance of moisturizing.

You have beautiful skin. What is your secret? What’s your routine like?

“My secrets are plenty of water in the morning and how I’ve evolved over time. I’ve moved from over-the-counter moisturizers to department store brands and now to a more clinical approach with Revision Skincare. I love understanding the science behind skin care. Sunscreen has also been really important for me since I play tennis outside. I use toners and serums and switch from daytime to nighttime routines. Speaking with Dr. Corey Hartman here at the Elite Retreat was educational and confirmed that I was on the right track. I feel confident sharing what I’ve learned about and the importance of using multiple products to protect our skin. I also make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day and get enough sleep, which are both crucial for maintaining healthy skin.

Back in the day, we didn’t have all of this skin-care education accessible online.

“Yes, just like technology evolves, we can’t stay the same and expect the same results. Times have changed, people have changed and we’re smarter. The science has been proven, which is great. When you look at a 50 or 60-year-old, it’s hard to tell their age because of their skin-care routine. Now, you see young girls on TikTok sharing information—some good, some misinformed. As we get older, we must advise them as well. I have a 17-year-old daughter, so I’m very conscious of her skin routine.”

What are some of your beauty and makeup must-haves?

“I don’t necessarily need a lot of makeup, but I do love an eyebrow pencil, mascara and eyeliner. With those three things, I feel like I can go anywhere and feel really good. Without them, I feel a bit naked. I also like a good lip gloss or lipstick to add a bit of color. When I’m on the go, I always have these essentials in my bag. And when I’m playing sports or working out, I try to keep my makeup minimal and focus more on skin care.”

So, you’re an eyes person?

“Yes, because the eyes are the window to the soul. We communicate through our eyes, so they’re very important to me.”

Have you found any sports-proof makeup or sunscreen that you recommend?

“Aside from sunscreen, which I never leave home without, Bobbi Brown makes a waterproof foundation that’s amazing. MAC also has a great waterproof foundation. Both are perfect for someone with an active lifestyle like mine. For sunscreen, I use Revision Skincare’s Intellishade ($86), which gives great coverage and protection. It’s important to have products that can withstand sweat and activity, especially when you’re on the court or outdoors.”

The WNBA has grown so much in popularity. How do you feel about this growing recognition after paving the way?

“I couldn’t be more excited and happier for all these women reaping the benefits we’ve always deserved. We’ve always been here, strong and powerful, and it’s great to see these women getting the respect, popularity and brand support they deserve. I feel like a proud mom and it’s been so much fun supporting them as a fan. The visibility and recognition the league is getting now is incredible. It’s a testament to all the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. I’m thrilled to see the growth and can’t wait to see where it goes from here.”

What are your thoughts on the increased attention to what athletes wear and their glam routines?

“Well, to be really honest, I always thought about this. I felt like I was one of the only players wearing makeup back then. You know, I wore lipstick; the name of my book is Don’t Let the Lipstick Fool You. I always felt that while I couldn’t control how I looked during the game when I was all sweaty, I could control how I looked before and after the game. I loved the dichotomy of switching from being very feminine and embracing my femininity, to going out on the court and being tough and rough. I loved that transition.

I think today’s women can embrace it unapologetically. Even back then, players would give me a hard time, asking, “Where are you going? Why are you dressed up?” But I liked dressing for how I felt at that moment. I liked being feminine and enjoyed the idea of switching up and putting on a dress. I’m happy that today’s athletes are fully glammed up. Seeing them with lashes and nails makes me think, ‘Why didn’t I have my lashes done?’ I couldn’t play with long nails, but now these girls are playing with full lashes, manicured nails and done-up hair. I love it. I’m like, ‘Go, Barbie, go!'”

What is your most memorable Olympic memory?

“My most memorable Olympic memory would be the 1996 Olympics because it was here in the U.S.. We had over 40,000 fans chanting ‘USA’ when we won the gold medal. It’s so memorable because our national anthem played in front of a completely American crowd. That sight still gives me chills. It was a highlight because while you want to win, you’re not guaranteed a gold medal and not in your home country. Accomplishing that was incredible. We were one of the last teams to win gold that year, which was the year of the woman. Gymnastics, softball, volleyball and wrestling teams had all won gold, so being the last added a lot of pressure. I was very happy that we won the gold.”

What is your favorite way to unwind?

‘My favorite way to unwind is either a hot bath at home or a spa day. A spa day, with a nice massage, facial, steam room and sauna, is perfect. I try to go at least six times a year. It’s important to take time for self-care and relaxation, especially with a busy schedule. These moments help me recharge and maintain balance in my life. Whether it’s a quiet evening at home or a day at the spa, I make sure to prioritize my well-being.’

What message do you want to convey to young girls aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

‘Stay prayerful, write down your goals and make the sacrifice to work hard. There are no shortcuts to success. Enjoy the journey and the hard work and you’ll enjoy the success even more. It’s important to stay focused and determined, even when faced with challenges. Believe in yourself and your abilities and don’t be afraid to dream big. With dedication and perseverance, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.’
