Nailing your makeup routine at any age is no easy feat, but as our skin ages, finding ways to conceal and perfect without looking cakey or having product settle into fine lines is a whole different battle. While Kris Jenner may seem invincible, even she can’t stop the hands of time, but that doesn’t mean she has to look like it.

Makeup artists are, in a sense, modern day magicians, and any time we get a chance to hear from the hands behind the hottest names in Hollywood, we pay attention. In a recent interview with E! News, Kris Jenner’s makeup artist, Etienne Ortega revealed the products, techniques and tricks he swears by and stays away from when it comes to mature skin.

Kris Jenner’s Mature Skin Makeup Secrets

Etienne Ortega’s name may not ring a bell at first, but you’ve undoubtedly seen his work, as the makeup artist is behind some of the most iconic looks on the likes of Christina Aguilera, Salma Hayek and, of course, Kris Jenner. While he’s mastered the mature skin makeup routine throughout his career working with some of the hottest over-50 celebs, his first piece of advice is rather simple: “First and foremost, embrace who you are and embrace your age—whether you’re 25 or 65,” he told the outlet. “With Kris, our makeup styles have changed throughout the years. She still looks freaking fabulous, but I like using less on her now.”

Taking a “less is more” approach to Jenner’s complexion as she approaches 70, Ortega reveals the popular makeup step he avoids: powder. “I like to use a lot less foundation and a lot less powder. I don’t bake anymore. I want to sprinkle on the tones without saturating it with a heavy foundation. With her, it’s more about the brow, the smoky eye and the lip.” The reason he pares back his powder use is straightforward: more powder means more catching in fine lines and wrinkles.

While Ortega opts for a more pared-back approach to his mature clients, he still emphasizes the importance of having fun with your makeup. “It’s not a tattoo—it’s not there forever. You should have fun with it, play with it, explore it.”
