Living life under the constant spotlight is not easy, but Kim Kardashian has never been one to shy away from talking about the hard stuff, namely her long-time battle with the skin condition psoriasis. The SKIMS owner and mother of four has been struggling with psoriasis for over a decade now, candidly telling fans about how the persistent flare ups have impacted some of the biggest moments in her life, almost hindering her from attending the MET Gala.
In a recent appearance on the medical podcast SheMD, Kardashian opened up about her psoriasis journey in full, from her first symptoms to her diagnosis and how she manages flare ups now. But, the star’s skin struggles are not singular, as she revealed on the podcast that one of her son’s has recently been diagnoses by vitiligo, and it’s more related to Kim’s psoriasis than you might think.
Kim Kardashian Reveals Her Son Has Vitiligo
Vitiligo is a rare, chronic autoimmune disorder which causes patches of skin cells to lose pigment after being attacked by one’s own immune system. Most people know the condition from celebrities like supermodel Winnie Harlow, but Kardashian revealed during her SheMD episode that one of her sons has recently been diagnosed with the condition too.
“[Psoriasis] came from my mom, went to me,” Kardashian began, “and then I passed it on in a different form to my son, who has vitiligo.” While she didn’t specify which of her son’s—8-year-old Saint or 5-year-old Psalm—inherited vitiligo, the symptoms presented themselves much earlier for her young son, as Kardashian didn’t experience her first psoriasis symptoms until she was in her 30s.
There is currently no cure for vitiligo, but there are a few approved treatments, including light therapy, topicals and sometimes oral medications, that can help manage the condition.
