Now you can have your Velveeta mac ‘n cheese and wear it too—literally, as your hair color. Just look to Julia Fox for inspiration. The 34-year-old actress made a bold statement while attending a Knicks game in New York City on Sunday, March 31, by trading her blonde hair for a striking “Velveeta gold” hue.
The creative mastermind behind Fox’s yellow hair? John Novotny, who regularly works with the Uncut Gems star. The hairstylist took to Instagram to share glamour shots of Fox, modeling a short hairstyle styled into retro pin curls. On their Instagram story, the hair expert described her new hair color as the “new favorite hair we’ve ever done.”
The hair color isn’t just inspired by Velveeta; the semi-permanent dye used for the look was actually released by the processed cheese brand. This limited-edition launch is currently available on Amazon, but only while supplies last. And no, the brand confirms, this is not an April Fool’s prank.
“Julia and I were both pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the gold color is,” Novotny told PEOPLE. “It’s a warmer yellow [reminiscent of] a warm sunny day or delicious bowl of mac and cheese.”
“A lot of yellow hair dyes tend to lean more [towards] slime green, but not this one,” the hairstylist continued. “This dye is a deposit-only color, meaning no damage.”
If anyone can confidently pull off Velveeta-colored hair, it’s Fox. After all, she’s no stranger to making bold statements that extend far beyond her hair color. As you may remember, the model sported bleached brows and lavender-gray hair just last February. And who could forget her unforgettable grungey black cat-eye liner from the Schiaparelli S/S 2022 runway show during Paris Fashion Week?
If you’re feeling inspired by Fox’s new hair color, a jar of Velveeta’s hair color will cost you just $8 on Amazon (the same price as a Velveeta cheese loaf). The four-ounce jar should cover a short head of hair, per the brand. They recommend applying it thoroughly and evenly to dry hair, allowing it to process for twenty minutes, and then rinsing it out with a mild shampoo until the water runs clear.
While it’s clear that the hair transformation is tied to an advertising agreement with Velveeta, as indicated by the #ad tags on Fox’s Instagram Story, the collaboration still feels authentically aligned with her love for daring beauty. Novotny agrees: “Julia is the absolute queen of self-expression and always exudes confidence which is on par with living a life that’s La Dolce Velveeta,” Novotny continued. “She lives an unapologetic lifestyle and does what feels good for her.
She marches to the beat of her own drum and is all about living life to the fullest and embracing outrageous pleasure every day, which is exactly what Velveeta’s attitude is all about.”
