Another day, another celebrity hair transformation that has us all swooning. On Saturday, May 25, Joey King made quite the statement at Cannes Film Festival’s closing ceremony by stepping out in a sharp, side-parted chin-grazing bob, quite the contrast from the medium-length hairstyle she wore just a day prior.
The 24-year-old shared the news with her 18.4 million Instagram followers via a grid post, wearing a yellow floor-length gown styled with sheer black bedazzled gloves and Gabriel & Co. jewelry. She captioned the photo, “Custom @miumiu & a chop for Cannes day 2 with @lorealparis.”
King’s hairstylist, Dimitris Giannetos, posted about his client’s new look, too. He shared a video on Instagram cutting her hair with scissors to prove it’s the real deal to fans.
“OMG!! She really did cut her hair!” a fan commented in response to the hairstylist’s post, clearly convinced by the video. Another added, “I can’t believe it’s actually cut! It looks beautiful on you. Gorgeous cut.”
Despite the on-camera chop, some followers remain skeptical, believing it’s a wig. “Guys relax, it’s a wig,” one follower commented on King’s post, noting, “You can zoom in at her roots and see the mesh. Either way, SHE’S STUNNING.”
Another commenter on Giannetos’ post wrote, “It’s a hairpiece, the color matches perfectly, and made for a good post of the chop. It worked perfectly for her look.”
As of now, neither King nor Giannetos have confirmed whether the bob is real and at the time of writing, the actress hasn’t been seen in public to validate the look. Worth noting: This wouldn’t be the first time a celebrity has fooled fans with a wig—both Priyanka Chopra and Katy Perry recently tricked their followers with similar stunts.
Chopra was the more recent of the two, making an entrance at the Bulgari Aeterna High Jewelry event in Italy with a gently tousled choppy bob, only to revert to her longer hair the following day, as revealed in photos of her in public.
Perry, meanwhile, played a longer game, initially teasing fans with a video of celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero styling her choppy, layered bob, only to reveal hours later that it was faux. “You guys had a lot of strong feelings about my haircut,” she said in an Instagram video. “Let’s see that energy for KP6 [a reference to her sixth studio album] because this is just a wig.”
Whether King’s bob is real or a wig, the bob hairstyle itself is undeniably trending this spring and summer. “We’ve been seeing it more and more, but starting 2024 with a new fresh cut has been the trend of the season and what I think will be the trend of the year,” celebrity hairstylist Jill Buck previously told NewBeauty when discussing the season’s hottest hairstyles.
“Celebs like Hailey Bieber, Zendaya, Julianne Hough and Jewel have all made the move,” she continued. “There is something so refreshing about cutting off old energy and unhealthy ends. I personally cut 14” off and love it!”
