There’s nothing like a perfectly groomed pair of brows to make any makeup look feel complete. But those gorgeous brows can be ruined with just a few wrong moves with a pair of tweezers or a strip of misplaced wax. Here’s what to do when it happens to you.
1. Put the tweezers down!
“Stop trying to fix it by removing more,” says celebrity brow expert Joey Healy. “This is typically the first instinct to remedy the problem, but tweezing additional hair is clearly counterintuitive. You will have to let it grow out.”
2. Go to a brow specialist.
“Even if you have over-tweezed brows we can still make what you have look good,” says Los Angeles celebrity brow expert Kelley Baker. “Go to a specialist so they can show you how to fill them in and shape what you already have.”
3. Be patient.
Be prepared to wait four to six weeks for your brows to grow back out again. To help boost your brows, use a growth aid like Joey Healy Brow Renovation Serum ($125). “It helps sparse brows grow back thicker and fuller,” says Healy. “Use something like this to kick start brow growth or to help if you’re plateauing during brow recovery.”
4. Fake it ‘til you make it.
“Turn to the proper cosmetics for instant gratification,” says Healy. “Find a natural colored cosmetic—one that best matches your natural coloring—to get your brows back on track. When you’ve over shaped your brows, you need to work the edges a bit to create the illusion that there is a line where there isn’t.”
To fill in brows, Baker recommends using a brow powder. But first, use a highlighter pencil like Kelley Baker Highlighter Pencil ($20). “I draw the highlighter on the brow bone first and then smudge it in with a highlighter brush. This creates a little outline, so that way you can fill in your brows with the powder and an angle brush.”
