Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t exactly one to keep her wellness routine under wraps—she’s the founder of Goop, after all, with an entire section on the site devoted to her favorite picks, from supplements to sauna blankets and, yes, everything in between. But that doesn’t mean we’re not all ears when she gives us a fresh glimpse into her carefully curated, ever-evolving wellness practices. In a recent interview with Air Mail, Paltrow dove into her nighttime routine and shared her hack for better sleep, which might surprise you.
On sleeping with mouth tape…
“I sleep with mouth tape and earplugs, so I get all my sleep stuff lined up,” Paltrow shared when asked about “one thing” she always does before bed. She even admitted that her husband, Brad Falchuk, would “definitely say” her “strangest nighttime habit” is mouth taping.
For the uninitiated, mouth taping might sound unusual, but it’s actually gained traction in the wellness world. As Shelby Harris, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist and director of sleep health at Sleepopolis, previously told NewBeauty, “Using tape to keep your mouth closed while you sleep might encourage you to breathe through your nose instead of your mouth, which can be good for filtering air and getting more oxygen.” John Whyte, MD, MPH, chief medical officer at WebMD, added, “The nasal passages filter, warm, and humidify the air, which helps protect the lungs from pollutants, allergens and cold air.”
It’s worth noting: the health benefits of mouth taping are mostly anecdotal at this time and speaking with a trusted physician is essential before giving it a try, “as it may not be the most safe or effective practice for everyone.” Nonetheless, if you’re intrigued and get the green light from your doctor, Paltrow conveniently lists her recommended mouth tape on Goop’s website, so you can recreate her exact bedtime routine if you so choose.
