Finding the perfect shade of foundation could quite possibly be one of the most frustrating things about makeup. It typically takes several rounds of trial and error, and when you do find “the one,” the formula also has to be a winner. Needless to say, any hack to make the process a bit easier is very much appreciated, especially in our office. And when we heard about this one, which was shared backstage at New York Fashion Week, we couldn’t believe how easy it was.

As reported on by Bravo, the lead global makeup artist for Artistry, Rick DiCecca, just revealed an easy-as-pie way to find determine the right shade of foundation for your complexion.

While prepping the models’ skin for the Pamella Roland Spring 2018 fashion show, he told a Bravo reporter, “Think about what color jewelry you wear. If you wear only white metal, chances are you’re a cool undertone because warm metals don’t look good against your skin tone. If you look great in gold, I guarantee you, you probably have a warm undertone. And if you can wear both colored metals you’re probably a neutral undertone.”

And once you have that part figured out, DiCecca says the best way to find your ideal shade is to choose a few colors in your undertone category—warm, cool or neutral—and stripe them. One of the best places to do a stripe test is on your jawline, but take the stripe down to your neck, where your skin color tends to be more uniform so you can get the best match. “I usually say [to test] three shades,” adds DiCecca. “The one that you blend in that literally disappears, and is not discernible by your eye, that’s the shade that’s yours.”
