Emayatzy Corineldi stars on the Hulu series Reasonable Doubt, and let’s just say she has the part of not-so-simple Jax Stewart down. In its second season, the Kerry Washington-produced legal drama regularly throws out some “questionable ethical” situations, and Corineldi wouldn’t have it any other way. “Her complexities keep me on my toes,” she shares, while talking a side of beauty. “Nothing is black-and-white with that woman. And I love it. That’s real life.”
What is the most challenging part of playing Jax?
At the start, it was a challenge for me not to judge her, which is the worst thing you can do as an actor. You can’t judge your characters. It places a wall between you and them that is difficult to break down. So, I had to allow myself, Emayatzy, to ask all the questions. I had to have all the feelings that I needed to have in order to breathe life into Jax.
Can you share some glam secrets from the set?
Eye cream. Didn’t know I needed to start using that, but my makeup artist Ciara Coleman told me it was important due to our hours. My beauty routine is so simple and easy that using the eye cream felt like I was living lavishly!
What are some of your favorite ways to unwind after shooting?
Massages on weekends are a must. Also, getting outside under the sun, allowing my body to reset—at the park, beach, wherever. I love just being outdoors for some time.
What are some of your go-to beauty treatments?
Spa days, spa days, spa days! Spa days are a large part of my self-care routine. A good 80-minute, deep-tissue firm Swedish massage, followed by the sauna, is my favorite combination.
What are some of your all-time favorite beauty products?
Olive oil has been a staple of mine for makeup removal for as long as I can remember. My mother introduced it to me and she had the most beautiful, supple skin. Right now, I am loving Medik8’s line of skin care. It’s the first skin care I’ve ever used where I’ve seen the difference in my skin. I also stand by zinc-only sunscreen on my face. Neutrogena has a great one that I’ve been using for years. They also have a kids version that I use for my daughter. It is exactly the same as the one I use; I love that.
