Diane Von Furstenberg isn’t just known for making a mark on fashion with her introduction of the wrap dress; she’s also known for her wisdom on confidence and self-image. However, in a recent interview, the fashion designer shared that she’s not always a fan of her wrinkles.
“I look like sh*t. I mean I said I like wrinkles, but I hadn’t seen I had so many,” Von Furstenberg told Gayle King following the world premiere of the upcoming documentary Diane von Furstenberg: Woman In Charge, Deadline reports. The designer was referencing clips in the movie where she says she appreciates her wrinkles and wouldn’t want to take them away.
“But I like what you said….because you said aging is living,” King reportedly responded, to which Von Furstenberg said, “I know, I like what I said too.”
While Von Furstenberg’s acceptance of her wrinkles may sometimes wane, she seems to still hold the positive view of aging she’s known for. “I am 77 years old, I’ve learned a lot, and the way I lived I should’ve been 300,” Von Furstenberg told King in the interview. “Instead of asking people how old you are, you should say, ‘how many years have you lived? Then you take the age as a sense of pride, which is what it should be.’”
Last year, she expressed a similar sentiment during an interview with Julia Dreyfus on her Wiser Than Me podcast. “I love being alive, and [aging] is how long I’ve been alive, so yes I love it,” Von Furstenberg said at the time. “I would change the word ‘aging’ and say ‘living,’ because age is life. Aging is life, it’s not a decay.”
Bottom line: While you can strive for a positive outlook on aging and everything that comes with it, setbacks are inevitable. Even Von Furstenberg, who’s inspired many people with her thoughts on aging, doesn’t claim to have unwavering self-acceptance.
