Sun Care Gets Serious

One of the biggest trends lately is one that dermatologists love: We’re finally taking sun care seriously. With the realities of sun damage, skin cancer and early aging on the line, we’re looking for sun safety at multiple levels in our skin-care routine. And sun and skin care are advancing to meet our new needs, too.

“Skin-care products that combine hydration with sensitivity-friendly formulas have seen a significant increase in popularity,” says Elaine Kung, MD. “In the US and Europe, there’s a strong demand for moisturizing skin care with SPF protection.”

We’re also asking for more sun protection options. Greater interest in mineral formulas, a low tolerance for white-cast and a preference for reef-safe and non-toxic options have reinvented the sunscreen landscape. Even tried and true formulas are revamping to meet these increased expectations.

“My patients are increasingly looking for 100 percent mineral sunscreen options in elegant formulas that blend into all skin tones,” explains Omaha, NE dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, MD. “I love new launches like Revision Skincare Intellishade TruPhysical Clear SPF 50 ($86). It combines all mineral sun protection with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, three peptides and green tea extract to protect, moisturize and address signs of aging. While it’s been available in tinted versions for a while and a clear version with chemical sunscreen actives (and has been a staple in my wife Nancy’s regimen for years), the newest variation comes in an all-mineral ‘clear’ finish that is suitable for men, women and skin of all types.”

Colorescience Total Protection™ No-Show™ Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 ($43)

“This sunscreen combines 10 percent zinc oxide sun protection with EnviroScreen Technology, which helps protect against the damaging effects of blue light, something we are all exposed to as we spend longer hours in front of digital screens,” says Dr. Joel Schlessinger. “One of its best features is that it has a sheer, transparent finish that truly categorizes it as a ‘no-show’ sunscreen!”

Innovative Skin-Care Launches

The science behind skin care constantly improves and the latest innovations in exosome technology represent a huge step forward. In-office, dermatologists use exosome technology in conjunction with microneedling and laser treatments. The growth factors enhance the benefits and minimize side effects.

AnteAGE has created three different exosome formulas for use in-office,” explains Monroe, LA dermatologist Janine Hopkins, MD. “One that brightens and treats melasma, one that amplifies wound healing to amplify collagen production and one that they’ve bio-engineered to promote hair growth. They also just recently launched the first-ever non-tissue derived bio-mimetic exosome.”

And it’s not just in-office options igniting the skin-care world, but new products meant to support in-office treatments.

“There has been an upward trend in products that are formulated to support the effects of in-office treatments like BOTOX® injections,” says Omaha, NE dermatologist Daniel Schlessinger, MD. “They also provide similar wrinkle-smoothing benefits on their own if you aren’t quite ready for (or don’t want) wrinkle relaxers. One exciting 2024 launch in this category is the SkinCeuticals P-TIOX Wrinkle Modulating Peptide Serum ($148).”

Meant to enhance neurotoxin treatment, this new serum packs a big punch of great-for-skin ingredients with a rejuvenating and renewing complex made to give you the glass skin of your dreams.

“This uses a physician-tested Advanced Peptide Complex to reduce the look of nine types of expression lines. These lines are commonly treated with wrinkle relaxers like BOTOX®,” Dr. Daniel Schlessinger adds. “Additionally, it contains a Glass Skin Complex. It’s comprised of polyhydroxy acids, niacinamide and laminaria extract derived from algae to gently exfoliate and provide immediate skin-smoothing results you can see right away.”
