Lights, cameras, music—the MTV Video Music Awards always promise a night of dazzling performances and unforgettable moments. On this year’s pink carpet, all eyes were on Demi Lovato as they graced the VMA’s with a head-to-toe leather look and radiance that left everyone in awe.
In the world of Hollywood, achieving that flawless, glowing complexion is no easy feat, especially under the scrutiny of the flashing cameras and the relentless spotlight. Yet, Demi Lovato managed to steal the show. What’s their secret? How did they achieve that radiant, camera-ready look?
Ahead, celebrity makeup artist Jill Powell exclusively fills NewBeauty in on the skin-care regimen that prepped Demi Lovato’s skin to perfection for the 2023 MTV VMA Awards.
Demi Lovato’s Skin Prep
“Skin care is an essential part of any beauty routine and I always make sure my client’s skin is perfectly prepped for makeup application which is why the INKEY products were clutch today for Demi,” says Powell. “Starting with clean skin, free of dirt, oils and residual makeup, plus proper hydration, is key for a flawless makeup application.”
Demi’s Skin Favorites
Oat Cleansing Balm ($12)
Powell began skin prep by creating a clean canvas with INKEY’s Oat Cleansing Balm ($12), which is infused with soothing oatmeal and oat kernel oil to soften.
Hyaluronic Acid Serum ($10)
On damp skin, Powell pressed this best-selling serum into Lovato’s skin using fingertips and upward motions. “I like to start on the forehead and work from the center of the face outward, pushing out any excess fluids. If you can do one thing better for your skin, incorporate this hydrating serum into your routine because better skin starts with hydration. This product is lightweight and non-tacky and instantly hydrates to nourish your skin barrier and leaves the skin feeling plump, smooth and healthy,” says Powell.
Caffeine Eye Cream ($11)
When it comes to waking up the eye area with a formula that won’t cake or pill under makeup, Powell’s pick is the Caffeine Eye Cream ($11). “We have been working long days and this is an instant wake-up call for tired eyes,” says Powell. “The fast-absorbing formula instantly depuffs the under-eye area and leaves it perfectly primed for makeup.”
Polyglutamic Acid Serum ($15)
Powell used this hydrating serum as a treatment, primer and dewy base for foundation. Locking onto four times more moisture than hyaluronic acid, this lightweight yet powerful serum softens, smooths, plumps and brightens the look of skin, making it a must before any red carpet.
Tripeptide Plumping Lip Balm ($13)
“I love this product because it not only hydrates the lips making them soft and smooth, but it has plumping properties, minus the tingle,” notes Powell of this brand-new launch that hit shelves September 1. “Lips should never be overlooked and it’s important to let your lip products soak in, so this is a first step after cleansing, while you prep the rest of the face.” Powell not only prepped the lips with this balm but applied it over top of Lovato’s lipstick for a glossy, picture-perfect finish.
