We all know that trends recycle, usually with a few much-needed updates. Just look at the reformation of low-rise jeans. But there’s one trend no one saw getting a revival: crimped hair. This surprisingly hot trend has taken over this season, with huge names from Tyra Banks to Nicole Kidman wearing the look. And whether you want the three-barrel wave or the super fine, traditional ’80s crimp, this trend is one we’re having fun with.

Crimped Curls Are Celebrity-Approved

This might be a trend that we didn’t see coming, but celebrities have been rocking crimped hair all season long. From Rita Ora to Nicole Kidman, big, bold uniform waves have had a huge impact. These looks create a modern-looking deep wave that evolves the traditional crimped hair look for an almost mermaid feel.

And then there’s Tyra Banks rocking the original look. This more authentic take on crimped hair is all about the volume, created through dozens and dozens of small deep waves. Here, the look is fun and flirty, a tad more rebellious than the modern version.

“To be completely honest, I am not sure how long the crimped hairstyle will stick around, but it is very fun that it has come back,” says celebrity stylist and KERASILK ambassador Harry Josh. And don’t worry, using a crimping iron isn’t rocket science. “It’s very easy to achieve and very similar to using a flat iron. Start by taking small sections of hair, compressing the plates together and slowly moving it from the roots all the way down to the ends.”

Modern crimping irons vary from the traditional flat iron shape using grooved plates and the three-barrel waver. The difference comes down to preference. If you want the tight, defined shape of traditionally crimped hair, you’ll want a crimping iron, like this DSHOW iron ($22). But if you’re looking for a looser, bigger wave that retains the uniform look of a crimp, then the waver—like this amika Deep Wave Crimper ($120)—is your best bet.

Either way, you’ll need to seal in your style with a good product.

“You don’t need a ton of product as the tool will create deep waves with or without product,” Josh explains. “However, once you’re done crimping with your tools, I always recommend adding the KERASILK Finishing Cream ($32). This product is super luxurious and is infused with biomimetic silk and shea oil. The formula is 100 percent vegan and creates an irresistibly soft, touchable hair feel while adding shine for that perfect, iridescent finish.”
