Exploring the Healing Power of Moringa at Casa de Campo

Exploring the Healing Power of Moringa at Casa de Campo featured image

As a first-generation American Latina, returning to the Dominican Republic with my family for a vacation was a profound experience, connecting me to my roots and the land from which my ancestors hailed. Amidst the lush landscapes of La Romana, we stumbled upon the newly unveiled gem, The Spa at Casa de Campo, a sanctuary where luxury, wellness, and sustainability intertwine harmoniously.

The Spa is a sprawling 18,000-square-foot facility that offers a diverse range of cutting-edge spa services and wellness experiences. With its state-of-the-art hydrothermal circuit, luxuriously appointed treatment rooms, and technology-supported therapies, its the perfect wellbeing destination in the Caribbean.

What struck me most about Casa de Campo’s luxe spa was their dedication to embracing indigenous knowledge and ingredients. When speaking with spa director Irene Campaña, she highlighted their collaboration with Moringaia, a small family-owned natural skin care brand from the North coast of the Dominican Republic. Moringaia’s mission to end deforestation and support local communities deeply resonated with the spa’s vision.

“We are proud of the Dominican’s natural beauty and resources,” Campaña shared. “It was essential for us to create a ‘sense of place’ in our service menu, incorporating the incredible benefits of the Moringa plant, also known as the ‘miracle tree.’“

The Naturally Healing “Miracle Plant”

The moringa plant has long been cherished in the Dominican Republic for its numerous health and beauty benefits. This botanical treasure is packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and has the ability to address a wide spectrum of health concerns, from boosting the immune system and promoting healthy digestion to aiding in managing blood sugar levels. Its leaves, seeds, and even roots contribute to various traditional and modern medicinal practices.

For its skin benefits, it is known to aid in reducing inflammation and protecting the skin from environmental damage. Casa de Campo Spa’s signature massages use moringa’s healing properties by infusing each treatment with Moringaia’s Miracle Oil ($58). What’s even more inspiring is the sustainability aspect of this collaboration. Moringaia manufactures their products on a solar-powered farm, and prioritizing environmental conservation. Working together, the spa and brand collaborated to share ideas and become more efficient and eco-friendly. “We suggested to the brand various ways to reformat packaging, reduce costs and lessen their environmental impact,” Campaña explained. “It’s an ideal partnership where we both strive to protect and preserve our beautiful island.”

At The Spa, every aspect of the experience is designed to honor the local community and natural resources. From the private gardens and outdoor rain showers to the locally grown produce at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, the effort toward sustainability and appreciation for the land are evident in every detail.

As I laid on the massage table, surrounded by the scents of moringa, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of pride and connection to my heritage. While experiencing unparalleled luxury, it also felt good to know the ingredient anchored me even more to the beautiful, lush environment of La Romana. I not only felt restored, I also walked away with a renewed appreciation for the natural wonders of my homeland and the hope that more wellness centers follow in their footsteps by blending luxury with sustainability.
