It’s been eight years since Cameron Diaz graced the screens in a major motion picture, and the actress says she doesn’t miss being a part of the Hollywood machine or the pressures to maintain beauty standards. On Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers podcast, Diaz says she used to pay attention to societal ideals about women, but she’s enjoyed the time away from those pressures and pays no attention to her looks anymore.
“It’s hard not to look at yourself and judge yourself against other markers of beauty, and I think that that’s one of the biggest things. The last eight years girl—I’m like a wild animal. I’m a beast,” the 49-year-old star told Visage.
Of the constant focus on appearance and negative self-talk, Diaz says she’s learned to be happy with herself just as she is. “It’s toxic. You just start to pick yourself apart,” she says. “And you’re like, ‘why am I sitting here like being so mean to myself?’ My body is strong. My body’s capable… why am I going to talk down to it? Why am I going to be mean to it when it’s carried me this far? It’s given me this much experience, all the things that I’ve gotten to do is because my body has taken me and has been strong enough to get me there. Why am I going to abuse it?”
Diaz turns 50 this year and she says she’s embracing the upcoming milestone but has no anti-aging game plan and says that’s the farthest thing from her mind. “I literally do nothing,” she shared. “I never wash my face. I have a billion products that I never use. Twice a month If I’m lucky, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I better put this on. One time works, right? Like, is that all you have to do?'”
Noting that she does have a young child—daughter Raddix is now two—she says vitality takes precedence over vanity. She admits she’s older than other moms with kids her daughter’s age, but her focus is keeping up with her active toddler, not appearances. “I’m not in that place right now where it’s where I put any energy,” she added. “I just really want to stay strong. That’s really important.”
