While stateside celebrities are dedicated to body hair removal via lasers and waxing, those in Brazil know that a glistening veil of blonde peach fuzz is considered to be the epitome of beauty. And while it sounds bizarre, it’s true. Coming from a Brazilian family, blonde hair covering all of my cousins’ arms and legs against their just-left-the-beach tans when they would come to visit left me envious of their quasi laid back yet extremely chic approach to body hair.

“In Brazil, women hate the look and feel of rough stubble and awkward regrowth of hair on the body,” explains Camila Pierotti of Brazilian beauty brand Sol de Janeiro, who’s been bleaching her arm and leg hair since she was 13, adding that they like to keep peach fuzz on the body and transform them into a golden veil against the skin. “It makes us feel feminine and keeps hair soft to the touch.” Naturally, I decided to try it on my arm fuzz to see if it really worked (top: after, bottom: before).
Luckily, the brand’s three-step Brazilian Golden Body Veil ($32) lightening system takes no more than 15 minutes and is beyond easy to use. The kit includes a lightener, an accelerator and a calming moisturizer for post-bleached skin. I mixed equal parts lightener and accelerator in the tray provided, smoothed it over my arms and left on for 10 minutes before washing it off with warm water and applying the Rainforest Relief Hydrator. The result? Soft blonde fuzz that left me looking at my hair in a whole new light.
