When it comes to people we can confidently deem a “makeup guru,” Bobbi Brown is surely one. For the past 30 years, Bobbi Brown has been one of the biggest names in makeup, working as a celebrity makeup artist, brand founder and even beauty and wellness author, so we’ve come to know and trust Brown as a vault of wisdom in the world of beauty.
Most recently, Brown has been known to give makeup tips and tricks to consumers, specifically those with mature skin, helping beauty lovers to look and feel their best. When Brown has advice, we listen, and in a recent interview with Real Simple, the makeup artist revealed what she considers the biggest makeup mistake people make, and we’re taking notes.
Bobbi Brown’s Best Makeup Advice
With trends like the “clean girl” aesthetic gaining popularity, we’ve grown to favor a “less is more” approach to beauty, but as Brown told Real Simple, using a light hand when applying your makeup might just be the reason it’s not coming out how you want. “I think that really the biggest mistake people are making is they’re just not wearing either enough or the right makeup,” Brown told the outlet, “A lot of people come in and they don’t like the overly made up look, but they don’t know what to do.”
How to remedy this common mistake? As Brown explains, “One of my challenges is teaching my makeup artists on how to make it look like they have no makeup on. You know, you need to lighten up under the eyes, you need enough blush, and if their skin is oily, you need a powder, but when you choose the right products—the Jones Road one, it doesn’t look like cakey powder. I like choosing the right textures for your skin. Knowing what your skin—and your changing skin—needs is really important. And I think a lot of traditional makeup on the market just makes you look too made up, so you’ve got to find something that works with your skin so that you don’t look overly made up.”
