The blurred lip trend “is all about embracing an effortless and natural pigmented lip look,” says celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. “Rather than emphasizing defined lip liners and perfectly placed lipsticks, the blurred technique leaves your lips with a soft hue that resembles the aftermath of indulging in a bag of cherries. With its subtle and gentle effect, the blurred appeal gives your lips the perfect pout that replicates the feeling of being freshly kissed.”
We’re not sure about you but looking like we’ve just been kissed and snacked on ice-cold cherries is our whole summer vibe. This season is a perfect time to opt for a more effortless look, and the blurred lip trend is much softer than liner, says celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Seropian.
“The blurred lip trend is gaining popularity because it challenges our conventional ideas of makeup looks,” says Greenberg. “This trend allows us to experiment with new looks and step outside of our comfort zone with lipstick.” She also notes that more natural and subtle makeup, in general, is popular right now, which makes this trend a perfect fit.
How to achieve the blurred lip look
Start by prepping your lips with a hydrating lip balm. Skip the liner and apply your lipstick from the inside out, focusing on the inner areas,” says Greenberg. “Use either your fingertips or a smudge brush to gently blend the edges for a soft and natural finish. Your fingertips are the best tool to achieve the perfect blur, but Greenberg says you can also try another trick. Seropian explains that you could use a product that has a lot of pigment and then dab some away with a tissue.
Expert-recommended products
Greenberg recommends using Lime Crime Soft Touch Lipstick ($15) and LYS Beauty Speak Love Moisture Matte Lipstick ($20) “as they have a satin matte, smooth finish that’s easily blendable. Both are moisture rich with a highly pigmented color payoff to ensure your lip color won’t fade,” says. Greenberg also likes Rituel de Fille Color Nectar Pigment Balm ($26) for this look as it’s super finger friendly.
If you’re more hesitant about wading into the unpolished lip look Greenberg recommends trying Westmore Beauty’s Hollywood Blockbuster Lips ($20). “It has a precise tip and you can go in with your finger to adjust the smudge appeal.” To add a touch of shine, top off the look with Bloss ($26), a balm-gloss hybrid Greenberg created.
For a multitasking product that can tie your look together, Seropian recommends Huda Beauty Lip Blush Creamy Lip and Cheek Stain ($25) “It’s the perfect product to achieve that blurred lip look, and it lasts all day!” And, loved by campaign face Bella Hadid, Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Lip Blur ($35) is made just for this trend.
