There are two main focuses when your hair is thinning. One is doing everything you can to promote hair growth and reduce fallout. You can accomplish that with the help of hair growth products, treatments and even surgical solutions. But then there’s also the more immediate focus: how your hair looks right now. We asked the experts to name the best style for thinning hair and share their favorite volume-boosting products for thicker-looking strands.

Thinning Hair Looks Thicker With a Blunt Cut

“For women with thinner hair, depending on the length, I strongly suggest a blunt cut,” says DJ Quintero, a celebrity stylist and John Frieda ambassador. “It will make any hair type feel thicker on the ends and create the illusion of more/fuller hair.”

A haircut defined by a single straight line, a blunt cut adds heaviness to the ends of your strands. These usually fall around the shoulders, helping to create the illusion of fullness. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice layers completely if you have thinning hair.

Blunt bobs and lobs are ideal for creating the illusion of thicker hair, while soft, face-framing layers add movement without sacrificing density,” notes celebrity stylist and Moroccanoil global ambassador Dimitris Giannetos. “If you prefer shorter styles, a tousled pixie can work beautifully when styled with texture.”

“If you are looking to get layers, instead of layering the whole head, which would make fine hair feel thinner, try just doing face-framing layers,” agrees Quintero. “It will create the illusion of layers with the movement in the front while maintaining all the fullness from the back.”

You can also work with your stylist to help disguise areas of concern.

“A side part or soft face-framing pieces can also help disguise thinning areas,” Giannetos notes.

Tips to Thicken Strands

From your shower to styling, there are tons of ways to add some oomf to your strands.

“The ULTRAFiller+ line is great and has been a go-to with my clients with finer hair lately,” Quintero says. “Instead of ruffing up the cuticle, like most products do to get volume, it plumps and adds space in between the hair to do the same thing.”

When styling, Giannetos recommends using a volumizing mist at the roots and sealing your style with a strong hold hair spray. “For instant fullness, Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo (in your tone) can be lightly dusted along the hairline to create a natural, denser look,” he adds.
