From rose gold and blorange to tiger eye, we saw our fair share of hair color trends in 2017. And now, there’s a new one trending for 2018: blackberry. According to Pinterest research, saves for blackberry hair are up 355 percent since January, and are continuing to rise.
Micky Kibbe, master colorist and owner of Swoon salon in Austin, TX, describes the color as dark brown or black with dominant purple-red tones. It’s surprising to see a deep, rich hue trending as we move into spring (typically the time when people lighten up their hair to reflect warmer temperatures), but Kibbe isn’t so surprised. “Vibrant shades like this one are becoming more normal and people want change.” It’s also a low-maintenance option if your hair is already dark because there’s no distinct root line and the purple highlights will naturally grow out—they can also be covered up easily when you’re ready to move on to another color.

Kibbe says blackberry color works best on those who already have dark hair because most people look best within two shades of their natural color. “If your hair is naturally blond or light brown, this shade may not be your best choice. I also recommend trying demi- or semipermanent color rather than permanent, so you can have more options for change in the future.”
