Noticing a yellowing smile? While there are many in-office treatments that your dentist can provide to boost your brightness in a flash, at-home whitening is quick, easy, and can offer some pretty dramatic results, too. Whether you’re in-between appointments or just starting your whitening journey, dentists sound off on the at-home teeth whitening products that you should be reaching for first.
Cranberry Township, PA cosmetic dentist Brian A. Klaich, DDS says his practice prefers the Philips Zoom DayWhite product available through dentist’s offices. He notes that “compliance is always an issue with at-home whitening kits, but we love the day white product because it only requires one 15-30 minute session a day.”
Los Altos, CA cosmetic dentist Marlana Shile, DDS also likes this option, noting that the flavor is mild and patients don’t complain of increased sensitivity while using the product.
Boca Raton, FL cosmetic dentist Clive Rosenbusch, DDS uses KöR Whitening in his office and recommends it for at-home use as well. Something that makes the products unique is that “they do not have preservatives and must be refrigerated. This allows it to be stronger as the preservatives interfere with the strength of the bleach.”
Philips NiteWhite is the standard take-home option of New York cosmetic dentist Timothy Chase, DDS. It comes with custom-made trays for those who would rather whiten at home or want the occasional boost, explains Dr. Chase.
Beverly Hills Cosmetic dentist Kourosh Maddahi, DDS says his go-to at-home whitening system is the Luminuex Whitening Kit ($39). “I like all the products in here because they’re certified non-toxic, peroxide-free, enamel-safe and they protect the oral microbiome.”
“My favorite at-home product is Opalescence Go 15% Hydrogen Peroxide Whitening Gel ($39),” says Sarasota, FL cosmetic dentist Jenifer C. Back, DMD. “It has active ingredients to prevent sensitivity and you get excellent results using it for four 30-minute sessions!”
Atlanta cosmetic dentist Ronald Goldstein, DDS says the best teeth whitening system is the Opalescence Tooth Whitening System ($30). “This consists of specially-fitted home bleaching trays made in our office and then we decide on the proper bleaching strength, from 10 percent to 35 percent gel, to fit into the trays. This is the most efficient way to home bleach. Another alternative is to bleach in the office and then take home the trays with the proper strength gel for maximum whitening.”
“Crest Whitening Emulsions ($50) just came out last year and it’s extremely innovative,” says San Francisco cosmetic dentist Swati Agarwal, DDS. “You simply swipe it on the teeth and go about your day, without having to worry about any strips or trays. It works really well and has super white results with minimal sensitivity.”
Los Altos, CA cosmetic dentist Joseph Field, DDS says Supersmile Professional Whitening Toothpaste ($25) is his favorite whitening toothpaste for a bright smile. According to the brand’s website, this product claims to whiten teeth six shades in just five days.
“For the patients who just want bleaching strips and no trays, we offer Sheer White Strips ($25) which contain 20 percent carbamide peroxide to whiten teeth fast,” says Dr. Goldstein.
Dr. Field has developed his own Professional Teeth Whitening Strips, which he says are a “fan favorite.” Included on their list of benefits: they promise to whiten up to five shades in five days, you only have to wear them for one hour and they contain 23 percent carbamide peroxide for a mega whitening boost.
