Sunscreen. A once overlooked skin-care step is now a non-negotiable staple of every solid skin-care routine and dermatologists everywhere can’t be happier. After all, the best anti-aging treatment is prevention. But which are best?
From a recent study of over 900 NewBeauty readers, we uncovered some interesting trends and preferences in the world of sunscreen.* Among the respondents, a significant 24.6 percent favored EltaMD, making it the most popular choice. Following closely, Supergoop! secured 19.5 percent of the votes, while Neutrogena and La Roche-Posay were also top contenders with 19 percent and 17.3 percent respectively.
When it comes to sun protection factors (SPF), our readers showed a strong preference for SPF 30, with 38.8 percent indicating it as their go-to. High-protection options like SPF 50 and above were also popular, garnering 29.1 percent of the responses, and SPF 50 alone was preferred by 28.4 percent.
The choice between chemical and mineral (physical) sunscreens revealed a clear tilt towards mineral options, preferred by 43.2 percent of participants. In contrast, only 7.5 percent leaned towards chemical sunscreens, while a notable 34 percent expressed no preference, indicating flexibility or perhaps a lack of strong opinions on this aspect.
Ahead, the most favored sunscreens among our readers.
User Reviews: What People are Saying
EltaMD
The derm-approved SPF brand continues to be a favorite for many, particularly those with sensitive or oily skin. One 33 year-old user praised the EltaMD UV Sheer Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+ for being “very lightweight on the skin” and providing a “matte light finish” that evened out skin tone. Another user in their 50s highlighted the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 Tinted, noting that it “feels light on skin” and is great at “giving a natural glow.”
Supergoop!
The trendy brand has carved out a loyal following with products like Glow Screen and 100% Mineral Mattescreen Sunscreen SPF 40. The former is loved for its sheer quality that makes “fair skin glow,” according to a 48 year-old reviewer, while the latter is a repeat purchase for many due to its oil-control properties. “It’s perfect for oily, sensitive, acne prone skin,” shared a 33 year-old reviewer.
Neutrogena
The drugstore mainstay’s HydroBoost Water Gel Lotion SPF 50 has earned accolades for its hydrating properties and compatibility with oily skin. One 53 year-old user commented that it “keeps skin hydrated and acts like a primer without the greasy shine,” while another 45 year-old user mentioned it “soaks nicely into my skin” and provides excellent protection even on long summer days.
La Roche-Posay
Another affordable, derm-backed brand, La Roche-Posay is celebrated for its lightweight feel and effective sun protection. A 30 year-old user raved about the Anthelios Melt-In Milk Body and Face Sunscreen SPF 60 in particular, noting it “moisturizes skin deeply” and that the formula “literally melt[s] in your hands. It is such a lightweight creamy product, it feels like you’ve rubbed the softest whisper on your skin.” Another user in their 40s picked Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Face Sunscreen SPF 60 as a favorite, noting it “works well without being greasy.”
The Bottom Line
While this study highlights the diversity in sunscreen preferences and the specific attributes consumers seek, the best sunscreen is the one you’ll wear. Whether it’s a lightweight feel, broad-spectrum protection, or a product that doubles as a primer, it’s clear there’s something for everyone out there.
