Raise your hand if you’ve tuned into The Bachelor (or Bachelorette) and had instant hair envy. I’ll put both my hands up! On Ben Higgins’ season alone, I found myself staring at the TV every Monday night wondering how Caila’s locks could possibly remain so voluminous and frizz-free, even in the worst humidity. And don’t even get me started on JoJo’s perfect beachy waves day in and day out—even her topknots look like the work of a pro. So when I learned that Kristin Grip, an LA-based stylist, extension guru and founder of Tease Salon, was responsible for several of Bachelor Nation’s best looks, I had to pick her brain. Here are all the juicy details.

NewBeauty: Which Bachelor Nation stars do you work with?
Kristin Grip: I’ve worked on many of the women from Bachelor Nation—I started with JoJo Fletcher just before the filming of her season began. I’ve also worked on Becca Tilley, Lauren Bushnell, Corinne Olympios, Amanda Stanton and Ashley Iaconetti. The girls I see on a more regular basis are Lauren, Amanda and Corinne.
NB: What is it like to work with them?
KG: I’m a big Bachelor fan, so it’s fun to have these girls walk right out of the TV and sit in my chair. I never know what to expect when I first meet them, but while watching The Bachelor, I spend the season trying to analyze everyone’s hair. What’s their natural color? Do they have extensions? What size curling iron do they use? One thing that has surprised me is that every girl I’ve met has great hair naturally. Seriously, all of them. The ones who do wear extensions either do it because they need a pop of color or because they want their hair longer and don’t want to wait for it to grow. Hair extensions are such an instant gratification and can so easily give a client that change they want right away.
NB: You’re known for your skill with hair extensions. What type do these girls most commonly request?
KG: I specialize in multiple methods of extensions, but the most popular among this group are keratin individuals, custom clip-ins and beaded wefts. Like I said earlier, these girls already have great hair, so some of them just like to have a simple clip-in set they can wear for the rose ceremonies or important events when they want that extra inch or two, while other girls opt for a more permanent method like keratin individuals or beaded wefts, which are very popular at my salon.
NB: Do the girls have hairstylists when they’re on the show?
KG: This is the one question people always ask me, and the answer is no. All of the women do their own hairstyling and makeup during filming. The one exception is if you are the Bachelorette, and then the show offers a makeup and hair team. I know with JoJo, she really likes how she curls her own hair, and a lot of times she wants to do it herself. She likes to keep the front curls going away from her face and then alternates the rest of the curls—one section back, then one section forward—to give a more undone look. She uses a 1.25” curling iron to get her famous curls.

NB: Whose hair is your favorite?
KG: All of these girls have great hair, but I’d have to say JoJo’s is my favorite. Her roots are her natural color, which complement her eyes and her skin tone so well, and her ends have just the right amount of brightness. Her curls are always perfect. Everything about her look is so natural and effortless.
NB: Who else have you worked on recently?
KG: I just gave Lauren a new ‘do on Monday—we chopped her hair and gave her an elongated bob. She loves her hair bright blond with very little shadow on the root. We curled it and then ran a flat iron over the ends to loosen some of the curls to give her that beach wave look. Corrine was in about two weeks ago and she was ready for a change, so we brightened her ends and then shadowed her root. She called me the hair whisperer!
Amanda was in this week too. Her blond ends had turned a little green from the chlorine in the pool while shooting Bachelor in Paradise, so I used a Malibu C treatment to pull it out. Malibu treatments are great for removing buildup and minerals on hair. It pulled all the green out and she was bright again. She’s loving her natural root right now, so we just added a few highlights around her face and a shadow/gloss at the root to soften the highlights, and she was done.
