Anne Hathaway graces the cover of Vogue France’s November issue and while the images of the actress are nothing short of stunning, it’s the actress’s candid take on a hot topic that’s catching our attention. When it comes to asking people about the cosmetic treatments or surgeries they’ve had, The Devil Wears Prada alum doesn’t hold back in expressing her opinion. Spoiler alert: She thinks it’s inappropriate and isn’t afraid to say so.
The conversation landed on this subject when the outlet asked Hathaway about her stance on Botox—arguably the most well-known brand of neurotoxin injections—recalling her 2010 comment: “I have had the same smile since I was little. I don’t want Botox to erase it.” Reflecting on this, Hathaway shared, “It’s strange to comment on a sentence from fifteen years ago. I know who the young woman was who said that, I know why she said it, but today, she seems unbearable and moralizing to me. As for my opinion on this subject, I would say that asking people about surgery is a bit like asking them if they have sex: it’s an extremely intimate question.”
The interviewer then noted that this question is “asked more of women than of men,” to which Hathaway responded, “Of course. It’s another way of treating women differently, which is why I don’t like this conversation… which I find unfairly loaded. One’s appearance goes so much further than the cosmetic procedures that one does or does not do.”
When the outlet mentioned that the “acting profession is based on the gaze of others,” Hathaway stressed that she doesn’t judge what “actors do to their face or bodies.” She added: “I just want everyone to feel radiant. People get plastic surgery for all sorts of reasons that are their own. Whatever means they find to not live crushed by shame or a lack of self-confidence, to feel better, I say bravo.”
