Face it, the only way to effectively lose weight is a long-term lifestyle change that targets improving both nutrition and exercise. However, if you’re still on the hunt for a way to lose those last five pounds fast, we’ve got a solution for you.
“People should take advantage of losing extra water weight,” says New York nutritionist Dr. Charles Passler“The average person who needs to lose weight is also holding between four to 14 extra pounds of retained water.” While it may be disheartening to hear that your body can retain so much extra water weight, the good news is that losing those last few pounds just got a whole lot easier.

According to Dr. Passler—his celebrity clients include Bella Hadid and Adriana Lima—there’s an “old dietician’s trick” for dropping weight quickly and safely. “Believe it or not, [the secret] is actually to drink more water. Start consuming half your pound weight in ounces of water daily, and in two to three weeks, you’ll drop that extra water weight.” For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, start consuming 70 ounces of water each day to adequately hydrate yourself. Simple, right?
By upping your fluid intake, you’ll reach your body’s optimal hydration levels and prevent yourself from retaining extra water. Because a dehydrated body will hold onto water in order to avoid hydration levels from dipping too low, staying hydrated is vital for making keeping water weight off. Additionally, when you’re dehydrated, the colon pulls water from stool to retain moisture, resulting in constipation which can make you feel—and look—more bloated than usual.

Finally, to boost your efforts, stay away from salt (it will only cause you to retain more water) and meals that only contain carbohydrates. “Consuming a meal or snack that only contains carbs will create a jolt of insulin production in your body that will create body fat at unbelievable speeds,” says Dr. Passler. So, load up on water and make sure all your meals contain a significant amount of healthy proteins and fats—in two weeks, you’ll be happy you did.
