As uncovered by Refinery29, Google searches of “teeth cleaning videos,” yield over two millions results and the top viewed have upwards of a million views each. That’s Dr. Pimple Popper status.
So what exactly is it that dentists are doing in these videos? We talked to Austin, TX, cosmetic dentist Elizabeth Lowery, DDS, to get a clearer picture. “Plaque is removable with a toothbrush but once it becomes mineralized it turns into tarter and has to be removed by a professional.” This is what we see being removed in the videos. “In these videos, you see the transformation as it occurs with the use of ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments to fine tune the cleaning and remove the hardened mineral deposits that are harboring harmful bacteria.”
To keep your teeth from getting to this point, she explains how important it is to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. “Plaque can start to accumulate and harden in as little as 12 to 24 hours.”
When we asked why she thinks people are so fascinated by these videos, Dr. Lowery says, “People are intrigued by what happens inside the body and the mouth is no different. For some people, it is a way to educate themselves about a procedure they need to have done. They can relate and want to see with their own eyes what is possible to achieve. Seeing great results gives them hope that they too can achieve similar results.”
