Oprah’s Makeup Artist Used This Nude Liner Trick to Brighten Her Face for The Emmys

Television brilliance and Oprah Winfrey go hand in hand, so when it comes to her red-carpet look for this year’s Emmy Awards, we were beyond excited to see what she had up her sleeve. In true Oprah fashion, she didn’t miss a beat, sporting a wide-legged black and white Elizabeth Kennedy tuxedo, paired with a slicked-back ponytail, a fresh, glowing complexion and her signature black specks.

Prior to the show, Oprah posted a series of photos to Instagram showing fans what pre-Emmys prep really looks like—including a brow touch-up with guru Anastasia Soare, hair appointment with Nicole Mangrum and a last-minute pedicure with the Footnanny—but our favorite photo (and also the most insightful) was when she was in her makeup artist’s chair.

Derrick Rutledge, Oprah’s long-time makeup “maestro” was shown tracing her brow bone and bridge of her nose with a light nude pencil to dramatically brighten the area and deliver a “lifted” look to the eyes. Once blended, the pencil acts as a pigmented highlighter (similar to the light eye shadow shade you might blend under your brow bone to “lift” it) that won’t crease, smudge or fade—perfect for when you’re trying to look your best (i.e. the red carpet).
