Beauty brands will also tell you that it’s all about the ingredients (usually to justify the price), but as one beauty blogger found out, you can’t always take their word for it.

Stephanie Nicole, a beauty vlogger, took a detailed look at the ingredients in the liquid lipstick in Kylie Jenner’s popular Lip Kit and revealed that it’s pretty much identical to Colourpop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks. The major difference? The Kylie Lip Kit (which includes a liner), rings it at $29 while the Colourpop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks cost $6. Colourpop’s Lippie Pencil costs $5.
Nicole stumbled on this discovery because she was first comparing the new formulation of Kylie’s Lip Kit in shade Candy K to the original formula. The Lip Kit had recently been reformulated and Nicole was reviewing the two different formulations. Then Nicole decided to compare the ingredients list to a popular dupe, Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Clueless, and found that the ingredients were pretty much the same.
In a comparison below, Nicole highlights in yellow all the same ingredients in the same order, in blue all the same ingredients in different order, and in purple all the same pigments in different orders. Nicole notes that pigments do not have to be listed in any type of order and concludes, “The bulk of the formula, the first several ingredients, are the same, same order. What follows isn’t enough to significantly change the wear compared to the new ColourPop Ultra Mattes.”
This isn’t the first time Kylie Lip Kits have been compared to ColourPop. In fact, last year after someone on Reddit speculated that Kyle’s Lip Kits were just repackaged ColourPop, Jenner herself posted a picture with ColourPop’s founders, noting that they “don’t have the same formula or exact colors.”
Nicole dug a little deeper and uncovered that both Kylie Lip Kits and ColourPop are manufactured by a company called Seed Beauty. And the owners of Seed Beauty? A brother and sister team—Laura and John Nelson—who also happen to be the founders of ColourPop cosmetics. Coincidence? We think not.
The lesson here? Always do your research—and remember, it all comes down to the ingredients.
