On her character Ann Darrow in King Kong: “The most fun I’ve had with makeup with a character is probably in King Kong. It was that 1930’s look and the hair was so beautiful in that era. The makeup was, too—that strong brow and pouty lip. That’s the look I most admire, but I don’t identify with it because I don’t paint my face like that.”
On her character Daka in St. Vincent: “I love to take on roles where I get a chance to transform in some way. There are certain roles I’ve done where I’ve gone quite extreme—in St. Vincent, for instance, I was playing a Russian stripper/dancer and that character was really transformative and fun to do. It was very much about the hair and makeup, and those things help you get closer to the character. Same with the voice and the way you physicalize that character…they are all great tools to play with.”
On her character Evelyn in The Divergent Series: Allegiant: “My character, Evelyn, is brunette, and because I have about three hairs left in my head, I wasn’t about to dye it, so I am wearing a wig in this one. I dyed my lashes and brows brown for this, which I actually sometimes do in ‘regular life.’ It’s nice for me because then I can leave the house without mascara on! She is a really fun character to play. I like her strength. I really enjoyed playing her.”
