Commonly consumed as a supplement in Japan, chlorella is a protein-rich type of micro-algae that many health and nutrition experts have labeled a “superfood.” Laura Kraber, health coach at Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, says that chlorella is full of chlorophyll (used in medicine for its purifying properties) and rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium and iron.
“With powerful detoxifying effects, chlorella supports liver function and alkalizes the body—both of which can offer beauty benefits—primarily by supplying nutrition to the skin for improved rate of cell turnover,” says Kraber. “In my opinion, it’s one of the best supplements you can take for clearer, glowing skin.”
Kraber says chlorella comes in both tablet and powder forms, which are sold at many health food stores. “They are easy to take and can even be added to a smoothie or protein shake. I like Be Well Greens by Dr. Frank Lipman ($69)—a powder that includes a good dose of chlorella, in addition to other valuable greens and phytonutrients.”
