After childbirth, many women experience significant drooping in their breasts-a trait that can make it difficult to be comfortable with their physical appearance. That’s when some decide that a post-pregnancy mommy makeover might be right for them. However, sometimes it’s difficult to know exactly what surgical procedures you need. You may know the results you want, but not know how to go about achieving them.
Paramus, NJ, plastic surgeon Robert Zubowski, MD, says many women aren’t exactly sure what it is they need when they come in for a consultation. Many originally assume they need a breast augmentation. But, if there has been weight loss and a lot of volume lost in the breast, leaving significant sagging and loose skin, adding more volume might not fix the problem. “A lot of women think that adding volume will pick up the lax skin, but it doesn’t work like that for a lot of drooping; that’s only a suitable option for minor sagging,” he explains.
A breast lift, also known as a mastoplexy, is the only way to reposition the breasts back to where they belong. The goal of a breast lift is to restore the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. Most sagging results from overstretched skin and breast lift surgery removes the excess skin and tightens underlying breast tissue so the breast is supported in a higher position.
“A breast lift is like a tailoring procedure, and the length of the scar is related to the degree of lifting. Realistic expectations are key-there’s more scarring with a lift than an augmentation and most people aren’t aware of that. Breast lifts don’t improve skin quality, so if you had lax skin before, it will remain and that needs to be accounted for,” says the doctor.
Post-surgery, it takes about a year for red and firm scars to mature, flatten, soften and begin to fade.
