Could it be the end of sweaty armpits forever? Thanks to a recent FDA-cleared treatment, you may be able to shed your pit-stain fears for good. Especially if you’re one of the people who suffer from excessively sweaty underarms, you know how it is to live in constant fear of being found out.

To combat this sweaty issue, many sufferers have turned to expensive antiperspirant formulas or painful injections to stop their overactive sweat glands. The new treatment, called miraDry, actually eliminates the armpit sweat glands, which won’t grow back.

MiraDry uses electromagnetic energy, which is administered through a hand-piece that’s held up to the patient’s armpits. A local anesthetic is used to make the hour-long noninvasive procedure more comfortable.

The eliminated glands, which make up only two percent of all of the body’s sweat glands, won’t grow back after the recommended two treatments spaced three months apart. According to miraDry, patients with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) saw an 85 percent reduction in sweat during clinical trials.

MiraDry, which received FDA clearance in February 2012, is now available in only 11 states. Charlotte, NC, dermatologist Girish “Gilly” Munavalli, MD, is the first in the Carolinas to offer it.

“We are very excited about miraDry and believe that it will offer much needed respite to those of our patients who have suffered from the debilitating condition of excessive underarm sweating. miraDry outcomes can be life changing,” says Dr. Munavalli.

More physicians are expected to offer the procedure in the coming months. Are you interested in trying it?
