Botox Cosmetic has expanded its aesthetic powers, earning FDA approval for a new treatment area: the neck. Specifically, it’s now approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe vertical bands that connect the jaw to the neck, called platysmal bands. This is the first time Botox has been approved for use beyond the face, reinforcing its role as a top rejuvenation option for the neck.

Doctors have long used Botox off-label—without official FDA approval—for treating neck bands, such as in the Nefertiti Lift. However, this new approval provides a more standardized approach. The platysma muscle, when contracted, causes visible neck bands and can reduce jawline definition. Botox relaxes the muscle, softening its appearance and creating a smoother, more youthful look.

How Botox Treats Platysmal Bands

By injecting Botox along the jawline and into the vertical bands between the jaw and neck, doctors can temporarily relax the underlying muscles. Depending on the severity, the FDA has approved doses of 26, 31 or 36 units to effectively reduce muscle activity.

West Palm Beach dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD views this as a significant advancement. “For too long, we’ve stopped rejuvenation at the face,” he says. “Now, we can offer complete rejuvenation that includes the neck. The demand is already strong in my practice, and I’m excited to offer this expanded option.”

Washington, D.C. dermatologist Tina Alster, MD has been using Botox for neck treatments off-label for decades. “I’ve treated platysmal bands for years,” she says. “It’s something I do for nearly everyone who complains about their neck, especially those in their late 30s and beyond.”

Now Approved for Four Key Areas

With this latest approval, Botox Cosmetic now has four FDA-approved aesthetic uses: forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet and platysmal bands. Clinical trials showed that patients saw significant improvement in neck bands, with many reporting greater satisfaction with their neck and jawline just two weeks after treatment.

In an Allergan Aesthetics press release, clinical trial investigator and Arlington, VA dermatologist Terrance Keaney, MD emphasized the importance of treating the neck and jawline during aesthetic consultations. “The lower face and neck greatly affect overall appearance. Now, with Botox approved for platysmal bands, I can confidently offer my patients a treatment that provides visible results.”

As Botox’s approval extends beyond the face, more patients can achieve a full rejuvenation plan. With the growing demand for nonsurgical options, the neck is becoming a new focus in aesthetic treatments.
