It may be a controversial take, but November may be my favorite month in NYC. The days are chilly and crisp, but not yet frigid, the days aren’t too short and Thanksgiving (the food, the parade; all of it). But nothing tops that November is peak time for fall foliage in the city. Only this month, shades of yellows, oranges and reds on every tree turn the city golden. Fitting then, that November’s birthstone is citrine, prized for its yellow and orange hues. And, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), citrine is “known to have calming energies while bringing fortune and warmth to the wearer.”

The name citrine is derived from the French word for “lemon” (citron), but November’s gems take on many facets in hue, ranging from mustardy-golds to warm oranges with hints of taupe. As a nail color it may be a more unconventional choice, but with holiday shopping and dropping temps they had me at “fortune” and “warmth.” For 12 citrine-inspired nail colors to celebrate the coziest month of the year, keep reading.
