“Ziggy was the inspiration!” celebrity hairstylist Peter Lux captioned an Instagram photo of his client, Lily Allen. In the shot, the 39-year-old singer-songwriter is seen sporting a bold, spicy red hair color paired with a modern mullet. The look features choppy layered bangs, volume at the top, and an overall edgy vibe, a clear nod to David Bowie’s iconic alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust, who famously rocked a very similar style in the 1970s.
While Lux handled the cut, celebrity colorist Lena Ott was responsible for bringing Allen’s red hair color to life. She, too, posted about the “Smile” hitmaker’s transformation on Instagram, reposting British Vogue’s declaration of the look as a “pumpkin spice mullet—just in time for autumn.” It’s clear Ott agrees with that fitting description, and so do we—how could you not?
Allen’s new hair color also reminds us of the trending cayenne copper hue that’s making waves right now. Celebrity colorist and founder of the Rita Hazan Salon, Rita Hazan, previously described the shade as “a spicy copper red color perfect for this autumn season. It is more of a deeper tone and not a bright red pepper color,” she explained. “This tone of copper is a deep, fiery red color, while cowboy copper [another trending red hair color] uses brown tones to create a reddish-brown hue.”
As Lux revealed in his caption, Allen’s transformation was for an Hermès event. Naturally, the singer styled her new look with a white Birkin bag. Keeping things casual-chic, she paired her statement hair with a gray sweater, accessorized with bracelets and rings. Check out the look for yourself below. Feeling inspired to channel your favorite rock star—or fall’s signature flavor? We’re pretty sure Allen (and Ziggy) would approve.
