We’re inching towards fall while still clinging to summer, and we think it’s sensible for our hair color to mirror this internal conflict, enter midsummer beachy brunette. August and early September are the perfect time to infuse your hair with some lighter colors before fall hits or to begin to mix richer colors back into already lightened summer hair. This look is “the perfect, natural, yet vibrant transition from summer to autumn. This blend of colors captures the essence of that end-of-summer feeling but ensures that your hair retains a sun-kissed appearance despite the season change,” says Vice President of Color Development at R+COLOR Richy Kandasamy.

The midsummer beachy brunette “looks as if the sun naturally kissed your brunette hair while you were frolicking in the Mediterranean Sea minding your business. When, in reality, you sat in the salon chair for four to five hours to create this super natural look. Or maybe you did both!” says celebrity colorist Adara Forletta.

“This is the perfect shade for summer or when you want to add more brunette back into your hair and have a more subtle look. Subtle doesn’t have to mean boring, though,” says Forletta. “It still has a sparkle without having too much contrast.” Colorist at Maxine Salon Lauren Maldice describes it as “a soft brunette shade with cascading honey ribbons running down.”

How to get the look

Forletta notes that, for this look, she wouldn’t recommend going more than two shades lighter than your natural hair color. “It’s all about enhancing what you already have,” she says. To get this look, Kandasamy suggests asking your colorist “to add golden or copper glosses to brunette hair, creating a sun-touched, lighter effect that remains rich and warm.” Think along the lines of a honey balayage, says Maldice.
